Cast iron cauldron: wood-fired cooking for true freedom

Cauldron cooking is more than just a meal: it's an act of autonomy, a cultural transmission, a special moment... to be shared.

Why choose a cast iron cauldron?

Cast iron is one of the most suitable materials for wood-fired cooking. It withstands high temperatures, accumulates heat, and releases it slowly and evenly. This thermal behavior makes it an excellent choice for stews and outdoor meals prepared over a bed of embers.

A cast iron cauldron is ideal if you are looking for:

  • a rustic utensil suitable for wood-fired cooking
  • gentler and healthier cooking than direct barbecue cooking
  • a sturdy and durable traditional container
  • a practical size for outdoor cooking
  • a way to bake your bread
  • a solution for cooking without electricity
  • a convivial solution for outdoor meals or in a fireplace

The history of the cast iron cauldron: a thousand-year-old tradition

First made of bronze during Antiquity, then wrought iron in the Middle Ages, the cauldron underwent a major evolution at the beginning of the 18th century. In England, Abraham Darby developed the manufacture of cast iron vessels using sand molding techniques perfected by the Dutch. This advance made it possible to produce more regular, stronger, and more affordable cast iron cauldrons.

It was in this context that the Dutch oven appeared, a cast iron cauldron designed for itinerant wood-fired cooking.

This know-how then spread throughout the world, particularly in North America during the conquest of the West, but also in South Africa with the famous potjie.
