FAQ
What is ferrocerium?
It is a metallic alloy (mainly cerium + lanthanum + iron)
which, when scraped with a sharp edge, produces
extremely hot sparks (over 3,000 °C) capable of igniting small tinder
dry fuel.
Does ferrocerium work in rain/humidity?
Yes. Ferrocerium is not affected by water — even when wet, it
It produces sparks as soon as you scratch it. That's one of its great
assets for survival in difficult conditions.
How to use it optimally?
1. Prepare a small nest of very dry tow (fine herbs, bark, cotton, plant fibers...).
2. Place the ferrocerium very close to the tow.
3. Scrape vigorously with a steel blade (forming an angle with the rod of approximately 45°) towards the tow.
4. As soon as the spark catches the tow, blow gently to make the flame grow.
Is this safe for food use/around food?
Yes. Ferrocerium does not release toxic substances during
the spark — it serves only to light the fire, without any product
chemical.
Where do you manufacture this model?
We produce it by hand in the south of France, in close collaboration with a meticulous craftsman.
