Ferrocerium has been associated with survival kits since World War II. It is still very widespread, especially in the military, where compact, reliable, and weather-resistant ignition methods are sought. Ferrocerium remains usable even when wet and guarantees several thousand ignitions.

The sparks produced by a ferrocerium rod can reach approximately 3,000 °C. This very high temperature explains their ability to ignite dry and well-prepared tinder, even with a very small amount of material scraped from the rod.

For a 24 to 48-hour outing, a good firesteel should be long enough to be handled with cold hands and equipped with a dedicated striker, separate from the main knife. Approche Libre ferrocerium meets these criteria.

Wool hat: why is it ideal for managing body temperature in cold weather?

Outdoors, in cold or wet weather, the head is one of the most exposed areas for heat loss. Even near a fire, it benefits less from the direct radiation of the flames than the rest of the body: a hat therefore remains fully useful, even near a heat source.
Wool has several interesting advantages: it insulates effectively from cold and wind, remains comfortable even when slightly damp, and limits odors and bacterial growth. This makes it a particularly suitable choice for outdoor activities in cold weather.
